Self-employed & need dental plan?

Me! asked:

Does anyone know how to sign-up for a dental plan? I am a contractor and insurance is not offered to me but I would like to join a program. I like Delta Dental but I did not see a way to sign up on their site.

If anyone knows of a good program (not just a discount program) but an actual dental plan, that allows individiuals that would be helpful.

Thanks!

Look up Safeguard Dental HMO. There is no waiting period for pre-existing conditions and no limits on procedures. Being an HMO, you are responsible for copays only. The trade-off being you have to select from a limited dentist network in your area (if any).

Very affordable at 12-14 per month.

I sell health insurance and use this plan myself.

Delta only offers individual dental in a couple of states; chances are they don’t in your state. The only way to know is to call them up and ask.

Individual dental is more of a pre-payment plan. Usually, only people with dental problems want dental insurance. The companies know this, and they design their products so that by the time you pay the premium for the required waiting period plus you pay the percentage required for the procedure - you almost always spend more with insurance than you would paying cash. The insurance company is not going to pay out more for your dental care than they take in from your premium.
